Football competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru are scheduled to be held from July 25 (the day before the opening ceremony) to August 9. The venue for the competition is the Estadio Universidad San Marcos, which seats up to 32,000 spectators.
A total of eight men’s and eight women’s teams (each consisting up to 18 athletes) competed in each tournament. This means a total of 288 athletes are scheduled to compete. The men’s competition is an under-22 level competition (born on or after January 1, 1997), with each team allowed up to three overage players. The women’s tournament is an open competition without age restrictions.
Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay have qualified for the men’s football tournament at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games after finishing first, second and third respectively at the South American Under-20 Championship in Chile.
The trio of nations join Jamaica, Panama and the United States in reaching the Lima 2019 tournament, which is due to take place from July 28 to August 10.
They qualified as the top teams from each of the three zones of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) at the 2018 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in November.
There remains one more place available for CONCACAF, which is scheduled to be determined in April.
The eight teams will be divided into two groups, made up of two nations from the South American Football Confederation and two from CONCACAF.
The top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
The National University of San Marcos stadium will play host to the men’s and women’s football tournaments at Lima 2019.
Synthetic grass, certified by FIFA, has been laid at the venue.
The installation of seats is currently proceeding and spaces have been enabled to facilitate anti-doping tests.
The stadium will also have artificial lighting in order to allow matches to be played at night.
As well as football there is a huge amount of sporting activity taking place during the games which are second only to the Olympics in size and importance on the continent. 6,700 athletes, will participate in 39 sports and 62 disciplines, of which 22 disciplines are qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. There will be a total of 17 days of competitions and ceremonies to be held in 14 districts of Lima and Callao, in different venues such as VIDENA, Villa Maria del Triunfo Sports Complex, Callao Regional Sports Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
